South Sound Women's Center, an OB/GYN Practice in Olympia, WA

Removal of the uterus, or hysterectomy is a major operation reserved for those women whose condition and/or lack of response to other treatments make it necessary.

Some common reasons for hysterectomy include:

  • Uncontrolled uterine bleeding
  • Precancer or Cancer of the Uterus
  • Uterine tumors (Fibroids)
  • Prolapse or descent of the uterus

Our providers are experienced in performing hysterectomies.  The two methods we use are a vaginal approach which requires no abdominal incision, and an abdominal approach which does require an incision.

We prefer to perform a hysterectomy using the vaginal approach when possible.  This method results in less pain, so less medication is needed with resulting side effects, and the decrease in pain results in patients ambulating sooner.

The route of hysterectomy depends on many factors and your provider will discuss the best choice for you.

The ovaries are not routinely removed during a hysterectomy, so there would be no loss of hormone production.

There are cases where the ovaries need to be removed, or if a woman is past menopause, she may elect to have them removed at the time of hysterectomy to minimize her chance of ovarian cancer.

Since this is a major operation, your provider will discuss all of your options and the most appropriate procedure for you.
